The Eyes of Faith

The Hebrew word translated as “Behold” or, in some translations “see,” is ראה re’eh. The idea is to look, see, perceive and consider. It implies that we are to take heed and reflect upon what is being presented. As the portion begins, we are to pay attention to the fact that there are two paths (two
choices) set before us — one leads to blessing (life) and the other leads to curse (death). The outcome will be determined by our choice, which is why we are told to “see” (perceive) before we choose. In 2 Corinthians 5:7 it says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight,” yet we are told to “see” — implying faith has eyes to see beyond circumstance. Consider the example of Abraham who was challenged to offer Isaac, the son of the promise, upon the altar. He had a choice to make… obedience or otherwise. In Genesis 22:4-5, it says “On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” What did he see? It was something that convinced him that both he and Isaac would return. In spite of our circumstances, we need to see that following Him is life, and we need to believe that He will deliver on His promises. Our faith need eyes to see.
