Role Overview
Time Out is seeking a Things To Do Editor to join our New York team! The Things To Do Editor will curate the best of the city for our audience. The Things To Do Editor is responsible for producing content about the city’s festivals and events, from best-of lists to key features and listings. To be successful in this role, the Editor must stay current on events and developments in their area of coverage, attending openings and events within their area, creating magazine pages as well as digital features and seasonal feature packages based on audience interest and SEO objectives. This is an editorial role that involves writing both individually and collaboratively with the rest of the editorial team. The ideal candidate should be able to think across multiple platforms and develop stories that live online, through social, email and other channels.
Key Responsibilities
Pitch, write, commission, edit and proof content about great things to do in NYC across all Time Out media and platforms.
Determine what medium is best suited for a particular piece and work with internal and/or external writers, producers, designers, photographers, videographers, illustrators, product managers, etc. to make it live on deadline and on budget.
Work with the New York editorial team and the global content team to maintain global editorial calendar.
Ensure Time Out’s editorial standards are met, all relevant copyrights have been cleared, content is optimized for SEO and content meets legal guidelines.
Drive audience engagement via events, ticketing and content partnerships.
Create content that meets individual and team goals (e.g., engagement, traffic, conversion, time on page, etc.).
Post digital content using our in-house CMS; use InDesign and K4 to develop print content.
Manage and communicate the NYC events calendar, identifying commercial and audience opportunities within it.
Develop copy for things to do-related offers and support the commercial success of Time Out’s offers business in your vertical.
Have your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in NYC; use your professional contacts and social-media networks to be the first to identify the next big thing.
Oversee the layout and production of print things to do pages alongside the creative director and ensure daily and weekly deadlines are met.
Assist in communicating editorial, commercial and business requirements to the wider editorial team.
Manage things to do budget; maintain network of talented, reliable freelancers who can create content for Time Out.
Manage Associate Things To Do Editor.
Regularly post content, which may include sponsored or offers content, to social media.
Work with video team to create successful video content relevant to your area of expertise.
When required, serve as a spokesperson/quotable expert on things to do in NYC.
Embrace Time Out’s digital-first, mobile-first philosophy. A strong background in digital production is absolutely essential.
Act as an effective brand ambassador for Time Out Group and an evangelist for our brand
When it calls for it, write news posts relevant to our audience.
Set individual weekly content volume targets (new posts, updated posts, new listings, updated listings, etc.) for your direct reports.
Manage team resources
Manage a direct report
Liaise with Time Out Market team on curating live events and activations
Work with Time Out Market team on editorial initiatives that work organically within the market
Skills and Experience
Demonstrated desire to build a great editorial product.
Excellent grasp and understanding of SEO best practice.
Highest standard of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise accordingly.
Experience writing tight briefs for external contributors.
The ability to write copy in line with highest editorial standards.
The ability to work quickly to tight deadlines under pressure.
A strong industry reputation.
Flexibility and a professional approach at all times.
The ability to self-supervise in order to meet deadlines.
Ability to work in and contribute to a fun and dynamic team-based environment.
A clear understanding of the financial and functional dynamics of a global media business.
Clear ability to collaborate across business functions and with external parties.
Fluent English.
Must be educated to bachelor’s degree level or equivalent industry qualification.
