Shabbat Shalom (optional sing-along) – Improvised by pianist Charles Manning

In Judaism, “Shabbat” (the Sabbath) takes place on the seventh day of the week, when Jewish people enjoy a day of freedom from the regular work of everyday life, in celebration of the creation of the world. Shabbat offers an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual aspects of life and to spend time with family. Beginning at sunset on Friday evening, Shabbat is welcomed at public synagogue services and in Jewish homes by the singing of songs, including “Shabbat Shalom,” often sung to the traditional eastern European melody heard in this video. The words mean “Sabbath Peace” and also serve as a personal Sabbath greeting when spoken. The tune invokes a festive mood, with an exuberant, syncopated rhythmic pattern. The lyrics contain only the two words, “Shabbat Shalom.” Sing along with pianist Charles Manning as he improvises the traditional Sabbath welcome song, “Shabbat Shalom.”
