OR

Transfer Opportunity – Candidates must have permanent status as a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, SG-11, and be eligible for a lateral transfer; OR be eligible for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify for Section 70.1 transfer, candidates must have at least one year of permanent status in a title approved by Civil Service with two salary grades of the Grade 11 level;

OR

Provisional Appointment – Candidates possessing one or more of the following may qualify for provisional appointment:

Either 1. a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) AND one year of direct patient care experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness or with emotional or social behavior problems;

Or 2. an associate’s or higher-level degree in a human service field;

Or 3. an associate’s or higher-level degree in criminal justice.

  • A degree in a human service field includes the professional disciplines of audiology, community mental health, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology rehabilitation counseling, social work, speech/language pathology, and therapeutic recreation (including concentrations in art, creative arts, dance, drama, music, or physical education.) Also included are related academic disciplines associated with the study of human behavior (e.g., gerontology, human services, sociology, speech communication); or human skills development (e.g., counseling, education, human development.) Examples of non-qualifying degrees include but are not limited to: political science, liberal arts, and business.

Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and their score must be reachable on the resulting list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.

Incumbents must successfully complete at least ten days of intensive specialized training within the first six months of employment on a secure care unit as part of the probationary period.

Duties Description As a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, you would assist in the psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and care and safety of individuals diagnosed with mental illness or with emotional or social behavior problems. This may include those who are considered to be manipulative, treatment resistant, and/or dangerous to themselves and/or others. You would participate in active treatment programming and provide a safe, secure, and stable environment within which these patients can be given the intensive care and behavioral interactions needed for stabilization and treatment.

Physical/Medical Requirements: Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. The physical/medical standards include a physical fitness test, a medical standards evaluation, and a substance abuse screening. A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. Drug Testing: Prior to appointment, you may have to participate in a drug screening test and are responsible for the clinical lab fee. Failure to meet the standards may result in your disqualification.

To be eligible for appointment and to maintain employment, you cannot be listed as an excluded individual or entity on any of the federal and/or State Medicaid and Medicare exclusion lists (or excluded from any other Federal or federally assisted program.)

If you are appointed and subsequently listed as an excluded individual or entity on any of these lists (or excluded from any other federal or federally assisted program,) you may be terminated from your employment.

Additional Comments Background Investigation Requirements
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees may be fingerprinted to obtain a record of their criminal history information and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees will be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

Office of Mental Health (OMH) hospital employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. OMH does not allow for testing in lieu of vaccination.

Expected salary: $47357 – 50405 per year
