Kings County is located in the East Flatbush/Prospect-Lefferts section of Brooklyn, close to the 2 and 5 subways. Our patients are diverse, with the majority being afro-Caribbean. Most of our patients are native English speakers. Knowledge of French/Haitian Creole is helpful, but not required.
Responsibilities
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the general supervision of Midwifery Services and direction of the OB/GYN Division, with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgement. Provides antepartum, intrapartum, neonatal, inter-conceptional and gynecological care in accordance with written midwifery protocols which have been approved by the institution’s medical board.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inpatient—Labor and Delivery, Postpartum
- Outpatient–Ambulatory
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide direct clinical care to mothers and babies as defined by the policies, procedures and protocols of the midwifery service
- Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, and staff
- Precept nurse midwifery students and other medical students
- Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and inter-conceptional care
- Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities
- Role model advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse
- Licensure as a Midwife by the NYS Department of Education required
- Board Certification by the American College of Nurse Midwifes
- Successful completion of an approved electronic fetal monitoring course within 2 years
- Experience working with an underserved patient population is a plus
